Mmm, mmm, good...

It smells outside like the cheap pizza they used to serve in school. You know, the square kind with very little or no tomato sauce and the giant fennel seeds and the hamburger. Oooo, and if you were lucky enough to get a corner piece with the crispy cheese: mmmmm! The closest thing I've found in the consumer market is Totino's. I'm sure all of my NYC readers are groaning since they know what real pizza tastes like. But, MAN, I want some of that crappy pizza!

And as long as we're talking about cafeteria food, how 'bout those burritos or the frito pie. I discovered those in Jr. High. We were not blessed enough to have had a franchised restaurant in our high school cafeteria, but I remember pizza pockets. Wow, they really knew how to promote bad diets.

And then there was Sbisa, the ultimate cafeteria. I ate at that place for 5-1/2 years while in college. When they started serving breakfast all day, I thought I had it made. I could eat waffles and eggs anytime of the day. There was a cereal bar in the mornings. All you can eat of the sugary-est stuff made. The Mouse-Stealing Roommate also had an affinity for swiping food stuffs, bowls, and utensils from the cafeteria. I admittedly still have four bowls from there and only recently got rid of the flatware (not to be confused with silverware).

There was always corn and occasionally you could get hominy. And you could count on there being pimentos in 50% of the stuff out there. And who could forget the meringue you could use to actually cement a plate to the underside of the table. And there was this one dessert that you could get from the hot lunch line that was like a brownie that wasn't completely cooked. Gooey, fudgy greatness!

And, as long as we're discussing food, I have to mention the no-bake cheesecake the Best Roommate Ever made in our dorm room that never set up. We still had great fun scarfing down the chocolately, soupy mess with bits of crust.

Omigosh, I think I just made myself hungry....

Yeah, that's easy to do when you're preggo. :)

While I am one of your NY readers, and DO know what real pizza tastes like, I do remember the crappy stuff from the cafeteria in elementary school. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

Remember those peanut-butter chewy things they'd make for dessert sometimes? Man, I LOVED those!!
