It's things like this that make it very hard for me to not feel discriminated against.

Wanting to do my civic duty, I voted today. But I don't know that they could have made it a more trying experience. And I can honestly say that it was only trying because I'm voting Democrat. No, really, had I been voting Republican, the whole thing would have been over in a jiffy.

I've never voted in a primary before, so I went to my usual voting location this morning. When I got there a nice volunteer asked if I was voting straight Republican. Of course not, Silly. Oh, well then I needed to go to another location, to which he proceeded to give me directions. Sure, no problem. The directions were simple enough. And I can probably justify why they would set up certain locations as just Republican or just Democratic. Maybe it was to streamline the whole process.

I made it to the next location in just a few minutes. When I walked up to the school, there were signs directing the Republican voters inside and a little bitty sign directing the Democrats around the corner. Hmmm. So both parties can vote at this location. I walked around the corner and there was a sign on the door directing the Republicans inside. Okay surely there's someone inside who knows where I need to go.

There was indeed a large slew of people inside waiting in lines, but no volunteers to direct me. Nor were there any indications as to which party was to go where. In the hallway were a couple of tables and voting booths, but no voters. Oops that must be where I cast my vote. Where do I check in first? A gentleman in the line from hell finally directed me to the right line ti check in. One long line to check in, another long line to vote.

Over a period of one and a half hours, I figured out the following:
  • There were a total of three volunteers working. Two checking people in, and one working all six voting booths and checking people in.
  • There were significantly more Democrats voting than Republicans. Oh, no, it just seemed that way because....
  • There were FOUR precints of Democrats voting at that one location. That's right, in my district there are apparently four times as many places taking votes from Republicans than Democrats.

It was very tempting to just leave. And almost equally attempting to just vote Republican, because I'd still be voting. I try really hard to give people the benefit of the doubt. I just hope that someone screwed up and didn't schedule the necessary voting locations. I'd hate to think that this happened because I'm a Democrat in a sometimes all too obviously Republican state.

And who even cares about the Republican primary in regards to the presidential race? Other than candidates with an iffy grasp of statistics... Good for you for voting.

So I'm thinking now that MAYBE Democratic locations are limited because they have to be available for the caucuses this evening. It was still frustrating that there weren't more volunteers helping.

I noticed yesterday that my old regular voting spot was only for Republicans. The Democratic place? I had no idea where it was...

Ugh, that sucks! We both voted early, so I had no idea there were different places for the different parties. But Bubba went last night to caucus. I guess they figure out in the 'burbs that most people are voting Republican. Bubba's folks got TONS of calls from McCain's party, and we didn't get ONE here in the center of town. Funny....
